Aviation Services Provider (Global, Multiple Sites)

Blackvan Case Study: Business Strategy Development for an Aviation Services Provider

The Problem:

A leading global aviation services provider with a very traditional business wished to explore opportunities in the web and develop those that would help it retain its leading position for years to come.

The Approach:

Working together with their tenured consultants, Blackvan designed and facilitated a two-day workshop that was attended by the senior management of the company, including the CEO, subject-matter experts, and a small group of the consultants. This partnering was done to ensure that the outcomes of the event would fit in smoothly within the context of the larger engagement.

The company deepened its understanding of business on the internet by engaging several subject-matter experts in a series of interactive dialogues concerning interactive web-based applications, mobile strategy and the approach other successful companies in this arena had adopted. As a result, the company realized its product-centric approach was inadequate for creating the kind of success it desired, so it adopted a new customer-centric approach for this facet of the business while still retaining the attributes for its core business that had made it so successful.

After an idea-generation exercise, the participants refined their list of potential initiatives by identifying possible conflicts and synergies, relative market-potential, and relative ease of implementation. Those ideas that had the combination of high market potential and high ease of implementation were given priority. One initiative for a service offering delivered via the Web stood out as the kind of potentially successful application the client was looking for.

A modeling exercise for the structure of this application and the other significant initiatives was undertaken, and models were developed, tested and refined. Ways to enhance the offerings and their implementation were explored and requirements mapped out. In addition, potential pitfalls and hurdles were identified in order to ensure rapid and smooth implementations.

The Results:

In a two-day collaborative workshop, Blackvan was able to take this group from a near standing-start understanding of Internet opportunities to identifying several large initiatives for the company and even creating an early project plan for their most promising one. Within two months of the workshop, the company, with the assistance of their tenured consultants and an additional workshop focused on implementation, had brought its key application online and live on the Internet.
